oh, hi. it's been 4+ months. i had a baby. three weeks ago today. here's something i wore and felt good in during my "4th trimester," aka "how-to-hide-the-post-baby-belly." i wore this to a friend's son's birthday party tonight. i felt pretty good in it.

wooohooo!!! i made it! thirty whole outfits! the last few days were a bit precarious, but i made it. i have a wrap-up post coming, but i'll say now that this was definitely challenging as a growing pregnant lady. several things that fit great at the beginning of the remix are not fitting so great at the end. i had quite a few pieces that aren't maternity, and most of those have been lovingly placed in the to-wear-after-baby-comes box. not to mention, the temperatures ranged from 12 degrees to 90 degrees in the span of 30 outfits. though i didn't always feel like a million bucks at the time in these outfits, there are only maybe one or two that i look back at in pictures and really dislike.

i'm proud!

now, the question is whether i'll start slacking in the clothes department (and style blog department) for the rest of this pregnancy since i'm off the remix hook. we shall see.

i feel as though i am quickly entering "round pregnant lady" territory. when i'm pregnant, i don't gain weight much at all in the first half of my pregnancy. as a matter of fact, i typically lose anywhere from 5 to 15 pounds. but by the time week 19 or 20 hits, i am rockin' and rollin' with the weight gain. i'm 23.5 weeks right now. this also makes dressing cute more and more difficult. but i will persevere! because even though sweatpants seem appealing while getting dressed, i feel lots better throughout the day when i make more of an effort.

it is 91 degrees in west texas today. NINETY-ONE, people. it's february 27.

it is also windy as all get out. a sign, as my mother-in-law reminded me, that spring is coming. "march is in like a lion, out like a lamb, remember? the wind's got to blow to bend the trees. that brings the sap and gets them to bud," she said.

my mother-in-law is so smart. i just wanted to whine about the wind.

so although most everything is still brown and dead for the time being, the warm temperatures have this pregnant lady breaking out the shorts. as i walked in the door a couple hours ago, i stripped off my church clothes and immediately threw on shorts and a tee shirt. (winter remix or no winter remix, i'm gonna have to clean the house and lounge in shorts. that's just all there is to it.)

i wore shorts yesterday too, as a matter of fact. to a birthday party. and i felt cute.

that there, people, is a noteworthy little sentence. i felt cute.

i can't remember the last time i felt cute in shorts. really.

i weigh (give or take) 30 pounds more than i did in high school (and will add to that significantly this summer with baby 3 in utero), and i never wore shorts in high school. i wore skimpy little tops (ahem) and jeans all summer long. JEANS. i specifically remember being ridiculously hot. but no matter, i thought my legs were ugly in shorts.

oh, high school self. you silly, silly girl.

the point i'm trying to make is that it has probably been a good 15+ years since i have felt cute in shorts. and it's not thanks to some great diet and exercise plan that's left me with supermodel legs (impossible). nope, these legs aren't nearly as pretty as they were a decade and a half ago.

it's because of a perspective change.

becoming a mom and a wife and, more specifically and most especially, an avid follower of Jesus over the past five years or so has given me a new perspective.

glossy magazine images of new things and perfect bodies are art, i admit. but they are not real life. they are tiny snapshots of perfectly styled moments which people wielding photoshop are being paid to produce. they are beautiful, no doubt, and i love looking at them. but they are not real.

real beauty is my husband's affectionate glance even when i haven't showered all day. real beauty is bruises and scrapes earned from climbing trees in the summer sun. real beauty is the marred farm table i ate at as a child that i type from now.

real beauty is wearing shorts when it's hot because my focus is not on whether my legs look perfect, but what is most appropriate to wear to be comfortable enough to make memories with my family.

real beauty is not longing for what is not, but realizing the blessings that surround me at every turn, given graciously by the One who knows every inch of my legs intimately because He created them.

i am not against taking care of your body or promoting accepting unhealthy habits (goodness knows i have many) as unchangeable. but i am against being in bondage to negative thoughts about the body i have, the body that was made for me.

so i'll wear shorts all summer. sure i'll feel moody and large when baby 3 is close to making her appearance. but i refuse to repeatedly beat myself up because i don't look like i stepped from the cover of vogue.

i have far too many better things on which to spend time and energy. and it's way too hot.

(please, oh, please.) i would take photos with my regular camera (novel idea..), but that cord is in my husband's suburban. he is currently on his way back from dallas. i WILL finish this 30 for 30! even if i have to get my 4-year-old to sketch the ensembles and scan them in! (that might be kind of cool, actually...)

yes. i have the whitest legs in all the land. i figure they aren't gonna improve unless i let them out into the daylight, right? for the time being, you'll just have to be blinded.

this dress is one i would wear to some occasions (date, concert, backyard bbq) on it's own, but for others, it is too short. tonight, i lengthened it by wearing a pencil skirt underneath. it created an interesting block sort of look that i'm pretty sure i liked.

i did another necklace extension by adding a chain to this beaded number. i think i like necklaces landing longer on my preggo belly these days, hence my necklace extension frequency.

OK. i'm sleepy. i'm saying silly things. going to bed. tomorrow marks two-thirds of the way done with this remix. i miss my shoes.

i wore this to stay home from church with a sick child, go to a meeting with my doula, take the kids to subway for dinner and go to a leadership meeting at the church. it was quite comfy and cool for the warm afternoon. i feel like the transition from the shirt to the "skirt" is kind of awkward though. maybe a belt was needed? i dunno. i was just glad to have a "skirt" in my remix that isn't my form-fitting pencil skirt. note to self: include more skirts in the next 30 for 30.

this is me channeling the 70s if channeling the 70s were possible while wearing a maternity t-shirt from the gap. for real though, the flare jeans, clogs, chunky ring and hippy/native american-esque beaded necklace make me feel sorta flower child-like. i'm also digging the orange/turquoise combo of the jewelry. i made this necklace longer by adding another gold chain to it.

i rather like this outfit.

it was quickly abandoned for a cooler (as in temp, not awesomeness) college tee and flat loafers, however, when i had to whisk my oldest child off to the urgent care clinic because she rapidly developed a rash, high fever (103.6 at last check) and super sore, swollen throat. turns out she has strep and scarlet fever. yeah. i had the same reaction. "scarlet fever?! does that even exist anymore?!" apparently, it does. the good news is we caught it real fast and she is already taking an antibiotic and feeling much better.

oh, the life of a mom. the MOM always comes first. the WORE tends to be an after thought on most days. good thing i love the mom part, scarlet fever infections and all.

i took a short break yesterday. i looked and felt blah so i skipped. i was a couple outfits ahead of my schedule so i figured it was allowable.

i'm debating whether this top is flattering. in these photos, it is decidedly awkward looking. it's not as bad in real life. but it has elastic on the bottom, and i feel like it just fits weird. my bump was much smaller when i bought it, and it draped nicely then. we shall see.

i am realizing what many others have posted: the first half of the 30 for 30 breezes by and then things get a little more...interesting. i'm hoping to spend some time on excel this weekend (a 3-day!) coming up with new combinations.

just 10 outfits in, the remix has already begun to reveal that 1.) i need more bottoms (see post below) and 2.) i need some more pattern & color in my wardrobe as a whole.

since spring and summer will house the majority of my must-wear-maternity-clothes days of this pregnancy (read: i will be largest then), i focused on warm weather pieces with color and pattern. and since i don't really see my self wearing polka dot, neon orange pants (heh), i focused on tops and dresses with color and pattern.

unlike the i-need-more-bottoms revelation, the color and pattern revelation is more about desire and fun than down right need.

the pieces come from new-to-me asos maternity, old navy maternity, gap maternity, japanese weekend and boden maternity. i purposefully avoided adding anything from target, though there are several spring things i already love from there. i'm sure i will purchase something(s) from target, but for this exercise i am trying to branch out from my go-to.

my VERY most favorite thing is the asos color block dress ($62.76). you have to click and see the other views. to die for. it may be a must-buy spring events like easter, baby showers (i have 327 pregnant friends, only a slight exaggeration) and date nights.

i am also quite fond of the yellow old navy sleeveless top ($10). i have been loving other style bloggers' use of neon (in small doses) and would like to attempt it myself.

every single pair of pants here is from the gap. the skirt is forever 21 maternity. clearly, i will not being purchasing all of these, but they are all up for consideration.

the gray boot pants are very springy looking to me and would work for teaching, church, and casual ocassions. ($69.50)
the wide leg jeans are very on trend, and i totally have clogs like the model is wearing. i think they would be cute with flowy, girly spring tops. ($79.50)
the denim leggings are on sale, and i practically live in the ones i have now. though they are stretchy, they are not maternity and are beginning to feel tight underneath my bump. ($29.99)
the skirt is just cute. right? i only wonder if it would be hard to style. what could i wear with it? i'd need several options. oh, and it's also on sale. ($10.99)
the navy pinstripe boot pants are the same as the gray boot pants with the exception of the color. they would work for the same occasions as the gray ones, and i honestly lean toward the darker color. ($69.50)
the capris have a full panel, which i love for late pregnancy, and the color is called chocolate milk. hello! greatest color name ever. i really like these (especially with the shoes shown) for all kinds of different things. i will be my biggest in the warm spring and then blazing hot summer. these seem like go-to pants for that time of year with a ginormous belly. ($59.50)
i have been coveting these black ponte pants for awhile. they are skinny and super stretchy and soft. what could be wrong with that? plus, the black is something i could wear to teach. they are also on sale. ($39.99)
these skinny jeans are more structured and dressy than denim leggings and have the full panel that i like. i have these same jeans in non-maternity, and i like them quite a bit. ($79.50)

i included photos of this maternity coat because it is the.best.coat.ever. it's navy...love. it's a pea coat...love. i've had it since i was pregnant with ellie, and it's holding up nicely. it's a stretchy ponte knit almost feels like a sweatshirt...love eternal. it's only used for outerwear so it's not in my 30 for 30, but i thought i'd show it off anyway.

today's outfit is inspired by the fact that we found out today our baby is a girl! i wore pink to church for my own personal celebration. it was a party for sure. we're super excited, and i've already started pulling out tiny clothes and shoes that were ellie's. swoon.

finally, today is my husband's 31st birthday. he's the handsomest husband in the wide world. i love him so.

i had on this very complex outfit this morning that i stripped off at the last minute in favor of this simple mix. for some reason, because we're remixing, i feel i'm cheating if i just wear a top with jeans. the first thing i had on had layers and tights and a slip and everything was belted and...i was hot. i'm all for layers and funky combos, but sometimes all i want is jeans and a top. and since the 30 for 30 remix is about making outfits YOU like from YOUR existing closet, i figure no one is going to kick me out for only using 3 items. ...right?

on that note, i replaced my denim blazer (not yet worn in the remix) with these brown clogs. i was already missing a brown pair of shoes plus every time i tried that blazer on it just didn't look right. something about it being a small and me being pregnant and not...small. so, a swap has taken place. you have been duly notified. i think i reserve the right to swap things as necessary since i am GROWING daily throughout this challenge. ...right?

part of the appeal of the remix is that it helps you figure out what you need (not just want) to add to your closet. looking at this list, i can already tell...i need more pants! i'm really not leaving out pairs. i really don't have many. maternity pants are just so annoying. it's really hard to find good ones. only two of those three pairs are maternity, even. the denim leggings are just super stretchy. while i won't buy until after march 6, i am officially hunting for a couple more pairs of good maternity pants.

it is still freezing. we ended up having a delayed start, but i am teaching today. the highest goal of this outfit was warmth. there are a couple layers you can't see because of that priority. my favorite thing about this ensemble is the scarf. my gramma made it for me from this super cool ribbon yarn, and it's totally my favorite thing.

a bit about what to expect in my remix:

we are required to wear solid tops with collars and solid bottoms to school. yes, a uniform(ish). because of this dress code, my outfits on tuesday, wednesday and thursday will be solid colors and include a collar of some sort. an open jacket (that stays on all day) over a solid-colored shirt is acceptable. sundays' and mondays' outfits will feature what i wore to church. i'm making friday my off day since school dress code that day is jeans and spirit shirts (tee or sweat). saturday will be for whatever happens to be going down that day. in addition, i have a couple of cute date outfits coming since landon's 31st birthday and valentine's day fall in the remix time frame. if i stay on track, i should complete the challenge on march 6.

i bought kendi's ebook about how to remix as well as read this great post over at work with what you've got (she used kendi's book, too) just as i was getting started this time around. while a tad tedious, the process kendi uses totally makes the 30 for 30 seem doable. i'm not as organized as kendi or erin (another fellow texan!), but i'm feeling a lot more confident than i did this summer. i'm actually going to make it.

i LOVE this dress. the neckline is high in the front and a little lower in the back. the hem hits in just the right spot above the knee. it's ponte knit. what could be better? i've had it and another black dress that i also love since my pregnancy with ellie, going on 4+ (!!!) years ago.

i am also in love with these tights. i bought them at the banana republic outlet in san marcos in october, and they are perfect. they are super soft and super opaque. i get annoyed with tights that are supposed to be opaque, but end up stretching and losing quite a bit of their opaque-ness. these, THE best. i want them in every color possible.

this afternoon, we attended our babysitter's college graduation party. as it turns out, i needed a jacket because it got quite cool between the time i was out this morning and when we left for the party. stinkin texas weather.

this shirt is from forever 21 and is working beautifully for my smallish baby bump right now. the braided tie (love) was meant to go through loops that i cut off down around the high hip area of the shirt. pregnant or not, that is not a good place for me to draw attention so i repositioned the belt to my liking. it's my fav.

these shoes are new. i had been looking for some clogs. when these sweeties were sitting on the shelf clearance shelf at ross for $11.99 i became the proud owner of a pair. they are fairly high, and wearing them with socks (or tights i'd also imagine) makes it hard to keep them on my feet.

oh, well. for $11.99 i will suffer.

tonight was the christmas coffee at the church. my MIL, SIL and i hosted a table where we served chicken spaghetti (so yummy) and chocolate truffle cheesecake with a ganache topping and white chocolate snowflake decoration. i made the cheesecake from a recipe in this month's southern living magazine. it was awesome. totally tasted like a truffle. the ganache was my favorite part. we had ganache on and in our wedding cake so it holds a special place in my heart. and my tummy. ha.

the dress was fairly casual tonight, but i did want to be a bit festive since it was a christmas party in the evening. sequins and skinny jeans did the trick. i bought these jeans on clearance at ross just yesterday. they are still a bit baggy, and i did quite a bit of pants hiking as a result. i can guarantee i will grow into them.

henry baby no. 3 will be making an appearance in june 2011.

dressing a mom body is challenging. dressing a maternity body is a different kind of challenging.

luckily, i'm up for the challenge. i like dressing a preggo belly. it's fun. i'm usually trying to hide my belly so it's liberating to flaunt it for a few months.

here's me this morning. going to work. i have to wear solid color pants in traditional colors (kahki, brown, black, navy, etc.) and collared shirts (button-up or polo) in solid colors. sweaters over the collar are acceptable as long as they are solid in color as well. wearing something i find cute is usually pretty rare, but i liked today's look. nothing here is maternity, and i'm getting close to having to break down and buy a few pieces that fit the work dress code.

yes, i abandoned my 30 for 30 challenge. i didn't time it well, and there were some things that prevented me, partially, from sticking to my 30 items, and, mostly, some things that prevented me from posting outfits on this blog.

the summer is over now. school has started. i wear a uniform to school. however, there will be a 30 for 30 challenge that i start and finish in the near future.

in the meantime, i'm getting pumped up for fall so some inspiration outfits will be forthcoming. i'm going to post some outfits created from pieces that are already in my closet and then post some things that are on my wish list.

so i cheated today. i wore my rain boots all day. they are not a part of my 30 items. but i was supposed to have a garage sale this morning, and it got rained out because it's been POURING RAIN FOR DAYS. so i got dressed and left the house to try to cheer myself up. none of the open-toed and/or silk/suede(ish) shoes i have in my 30 were not gonna work for the standing water all over town so i think i can get an exception.

this dress is several inches longer than it appears today. i hiked it up using my belt because i thought shorter was better with my leggings. i like it.

this necklace was a birthday gift from my sister-in-law who had it custom-made for me. my daughter and husband have birthdays in february which are represented by the purple stripes in the pendant. amethyst (purple) is february's birthstone. my son's birthday is in august and is represented by the green stripe. peridot (green) is august's birthstone. it is one of my most favorite pieces of jewelry. truly unique.

today marks day 1 of the 30 for 30 remix challenge hosted by kendi everyday. kendi is an unbelievably adorable fellow texan, and is the fashion blogger to whom i'm most loyal. her photos are to-die-for good, but i think her hilariously sarcastic commentary is what keeps me coming back.

the basic gist of the challenge is that you choose 30 items from your closet to remix into different combinations for 30 days. kendi says accessories like jewelry, belts and scarves don't count, and i refuse to argue.

when i first started picking my items, 30 seemed like a lot. then i hung them all together. it looks like a very small amount of clothes for an entire month. but, that's why it's a challenge, right? along with the remix challenge is a challenge to abstain from shopping for 30 days. that will be nothing but good for my bank account. additional bonus: way less laundry.

below is some evidence that i have selected 30 things from my wardrobe. i decided not to do more detailed photographs because 1.) it takes too long and 2.) you'll see each piece many times over the next 30 days!

ellie and i are in san antonio at my dad's, and today we went shopping. i do shop at home, but i get my best work done when in the "big" city. above are most of the things i bought today. all on great sale, of course. i shopped at the gap, baby gap, j.crew, express and crazy 8. there isn't anything shown from express because it was all super clearance and there aren't any photos online. i also got a super great red studded skinny belt at the gap for $3 that isn't pictured online. then there are a couple of gifts that i don't wanna give away. i am most excited about the "forever skinny" gap jeans because they have a just-high-enough rise for a belly that's given birth to two babies. also pumped about the essie nail polish in "jazz" that i bought at j.crew. i wanted that mushroom-y color when i got my nails done last, but the salon didn't have anything close. so, when i saw this i snatched it right up.

i am in love with this dress. i needed something that would go straight from my school's graduation (i was the designated photographer...no pressure!) to an outdoor wedding at an art museum. it was just the thing. i'm also totally pumped about this clutch. fifteen cents? i mean, hello.

today was the last day of school. we had early release. i have been wanting to hit up glamourama ever since a friend referenced it when i complimented a belt she was wearing a few months ago. since i was done with work around 1:30, i decided to treat myself to some glamourama time. i.am.so.glad.i.did. i got three dresses, three shirts, a pair of a-ma-zing shoes, a bag, a belt, a pair of earrings, a bracelet and two slips for an incredibly small amount of money. it is all vintage except the belt and bag. the owner is so fun, and the two of us had a great time in her tiny shop making fun outfits. it was the perfect "it's summer!" celebration. there are a couple of dresses i must go back for. probably tomorrow. heh. about this dress...i am truly, madly, deeply in love with it. it's so comfy, and i love the colors. i'm a sucker for any kind of green, and this mint color screams summer picnic to me. it's hard to tell, but there is a turquoise leaf color that goes perfectly with the bangle. i wore it to a high school graduation tonight, and it did beautifully.

i don't have a full-body shot of this outfit because the bottom looked sorta weird. the strapless top is quite long, and looked strange and block-y with the strip of black dress that stuck out the bottom. i really like how the top looks though so i'm gonna save the idea for further tweaking because i need to figure out someway to wear this top. i bought it the summer after ellie was born, and i was nursing and larger than i am now in several areas. it's too loose in the bust to wear alone. layered, it's got potential.
